Reach for the heights on a via ferrata near Ramsau am Dachstein!

The Donnerkogel via ferrata, also known as the Intersport via ferrata, has the Dachstein to its east and is located not far from picturesque Lake Gosausee. It takes you to the summit of the Grosser Donnerkogel, at an elevation of 2,054 metres, in four varied stages. The absolute highlight is the spectacular 40-metre-long sky ladder – a free-floating ladder bridge that makes you feel as though you’re climbing straight up into the sky.

Who is the Donnerkogel via ferrata suitable for?

You should definitely have some climbing experience. You’ll also need to be in good physical condition, have a head for heights, and experience of using via ferrata equipment. The difficulty is described as “moderate” and ranges from grade A to C/D, although some sections are quite challenging. We’ll be honest: less experienced climbers would be better off choosing one of the other excellent via ferratas in the Dachstein region

Tour description

Your adventure begins at the top station of the Gosaukammbahn lift. A short walk of about 30 minutes will take you to the Gablonzer hut. The start of the via ferrata is just a few minutes’ walk away from the hut.

It’s time to climb! Put on your climbing gear, fasten your helmet, and head onto the rock face. You’ll make your way across rock slabs, up slopes, and along the “Chamois Terrace” (Gamsband), eventually reaching the spectacular sky ladder. Got a good head for heights? Let’s hope so! The panorama during the climb is simply breathtaking: the view stretches across Lake Gosausee, the Dachstein Glacier, and the surrounding mountains.

After successfully reaching the summit, the descent takes you back to the Gablonzer hut via the standard path. Afterwards, you head back to the Gosaukammbahn mountain station and make your way down into the valley in comfort.

Best time of year and weather for enjoying a via ferrata near Salzburg
